SoundStarter™ is a utility which allows your Mac to play a randomly chosen sound each time you start up. SoundStarter™ consists of two files: an application and a system extension (INIT). To use SoundStarter™, first drag the file SoundStarter™ INIT to your System Folder. Your System should ask you if you want to put it in the Extensions folder. Click Yes. The SoundStarter™ application can be placed anywhere, even in your Control Panels folder if you want. You’ll have to put it there yourself, though, because the Mac OS won’t put it there automatically because it’s not really a control panel. The SoundStarter™ application is actually designed to look something like a control panel, e.g. when you click on the window’s close box, the application will quit. But it is an application, not a control panel (mainly because apps are easier to write than control panels).
Launch the SoundStarter™ application to choose which sounds (either System 7 sound files or AIFF files) you want played at startup. Check the box labeled “SoundStarter™ Active” if you want SoundStarter™ INIT to play a sound on startup. If you don’t want SoundStarter™ INIT to play a sound the next time you start up, clear this box. If you check the “Keep Error Log” box, SoundStarter™ INIT will write error messages a file called “SoundStarter™ Errors” in the Preferences folder in your System Folder. You can read this file with SimpleText. If SoundStarter™ INIT is unable to play a sound at startup, it will record an error message in this file.
If you want to stop SoundStarter™ INIT from executing, press the mouse button or hit the escape key or cmd-period before its icon appears. If you want to stop a sound which SoundStarter™ INIT is currently playing, press the mouse button or the escape key or cmd-period.
SoundStarter™ INIT and the sound it played are removed from RAM after they are finished, so there’s no worry about it making your system take up more RAM (unlike some other sound utilities that we won’t mention). The system is already too big and certainly doesn’t need some cool app like this one making it any bigger.
